Stephen DeCherney, MD, MPH
Chief Innovation Officer, Quintiles Transnational

Dr. Stephen DeCherney is Chief Innovation Officer for Quintiles Transnational Corp. and a member of its Executive Committee. Prior to this, he was President, Global Clinical Research Division which included over 8000 staff in 52 countries with annual revenues in excess of $1.2BN.

As Chief Innovation Officer, Dr. DeCherney is responsible for creating new models of clinical development to bring new medicines to market more efficiently and improve post-marketing safety surveillance. His leads Quintiles' advances in three major areas by:

  • Directing operational assessments of new advances in clinical research and implications for Quintiles' business model. Such advances include adaptive clinical trials and iGuardTM, Quintiles' unique new post-approval drug safety monitoring service in the United States.
  • Expanding and refining the relatively new arena of "strategic resourcing" - non-traditional outsourcing and in-sourcing alliances that allow customers much greater flexibility in managing resources and costs. Dr. DeCherney interacts with executive-level customers on this issue and oversees operational implementation.
  • Overseeing ongoing efforts to increase the quality and efficiency of Quintiles' global services.

A former research physician who is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology/diabetes, Dr. DeCherney's research background includes five years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), followed by 11 years in various key management roles in the Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Delaware. While there, he was the principal investigator for more than 100 clinical trials. During the same period, he also served as an associate professor at both the University of Delaware and Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. DeCherney is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He received his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, and completed his residency at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. DeCherney received his endocrinology training at Vanderbilt University and also earned an MPH, Healthcare Management, from Columbia University School of Public Health.

He is also a Professor of Medicine (Adjunct) at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
