Neal Gutterson, PhD
President and Chief Executive Officer, Mendel Biotechnology
Neal Gutterson has 24 years of experience in the ag biotech industry. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1982, he began his career at Advanced Genetic Sciences in 1983. AGS was acquired by DNA Plant Technology in 1988, and was then subsequently acquired by Savia in 1996. After leading the DNAP research group for several years, Neal joined Mendel Biotechnology in 2002 as VP R&D. Neal became Mendel President in 2005, and was appointed CEO and joined the Mendel board earlier this year. Mendel is a premier trait technology provider for row crops through a collaboration with the Monsanto Company, and is a pioneer in the development of a new seeds business focused on grasses as bioenergy feedstock crops, through a collaboration with BP.
Neal has been involved in technology discovery and development, intellectual property, regulatory and business issues in the industry for the past 15 years. He is a named inventor on more than 2 dozen patents and pending patent applications. He is a member of the Board of BIO, the Biotechnology Industry Organization, as well as BIO's Food and Ag Section Governing Body. He is on the board executive committee of a new program supporting the commercial development of biotech specialty crop products, SCRI (Specialty Crops Regulatory Initiative). He attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business for an executive education program.
