Jakob Vinten-Johansen, PhD
Director, Cardiothoracic Research Laboratory, Professor of Surgery (Cardiothoracic), and Associate Professor, Physiology, Emory University and Founder, Reperfusion Therapeutics
Jakob Vinten-Johansen received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Systems Physiology (Cardiovascular focus) from Rutgers The State University of New Jersey in 1976 and 1978, respectively. During a five year postdoctoral fellowship with Gerald D. Buckberg, M.D. at UCLA, Dr. Vinten-Johansen became interested in the areas of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury, and protection of organs from reperfusion injury during cardiac surgery and non-surgical procedures (i.e. angioplasty). He joined the faculty in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wake Forest University in 1983, with adjunct appointments in Physiology and Anesthesia. In 1996, he moved to Emory University where he is director of the Cardiothoracic Research Laboratory, Professor of Surgery (Cardiothoracic), and Associate Professor of Physiology. He is author of over 200 articles in print, 200 abstracts, and 12 book chapters. He is also a regular reviewer for 12 journals, and on the editorial board of Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiovascular Research and American Journal of Physiology. The Cardiothoracic Research Laboratory is funded by grants from NIH and the American Heart Association, and from the Carlyle Fraser Heart Center of Emory Crawford Long Hospital. He also has six patents in various stages of review and commercialization.
